Spring 2020 Update for Seniors

We know the the Covid-19 pandemic has been very hard on high school seniors across the country. The suspension of regular school and extra-curricular activities has been a big loss for you socially and the shelter in place order is making it impossible to visit colleges for admitted student events. Although we are not available for in-person visits, we are using Zoom to meet virtually with clients. Book an appointment with Tamara or Ann if you have any questions or need advice regarding choosing your college, financial aid decisions, or next steps.

Choosing Your College
Unfortunately, the majority of college campuses are closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, so you will need to get creative in your research if you have not decided on your college yet.

Most colleges are hosting virtual admitted student events. Check your portal or search for “admitted student events” on the college websites. You can also reach out personally to your local admissions representative. They will be more than happy to discuss their college with you. Search for “regional representative” on the college website or ask Tamara or Ann if you cannot find the correct person.

Almost all colleges have links to virtual tours on their websites, but you can also use other sources:
●  YouTube also has many university channels, (like these for the University of Oregon or the University of Denver), as well as videos, vlogs, etc. uploaded by students. Just search for the name of the college.

Change of Financial Circumstances
If your family has had a change in financial circumstances due to the coronavirus, or any other issues, you should reach out to the Financial Aid department of the college you have committed to, or to your top college choices if you have not yet committed. Universities across the country have made it clear they are willing to work with families that have been hurt financially by this crisis.

Next Steps Once You Have Decided
  • Commit to the college and pay the deposit. May 1st is the usual deadline, but some colleges have extended it to June 1 this year. Committing earlier can improve your housing options at many colleges.
  • Notify other colleges that accepted you that you are choosing not to attend. This will allow them to let other students off the waitlist.
  • Update your Naviance account with all your results, most importantly with the college you plan to attend in Fall 2020.
  • Make sure to follow your school instructions for requesting your final high school transcript be sent to the college you will attend in the Fall.
  • Keep checking your email and portal. Follow all instructions regarding deposits, housing selection, medical forms, orientation, registration, etc. Some colleges rescind acceptances if you miss deadlines.
  • Write thank you notes or emails to any teachers or counselors who wrote letters of recommendation for you or helped you during the process.
  • If you’ve been offered financial aid, decide which offer to accept and follow the instructions given.

Congratulations on successfully finishing your high school career and we wish you all the best as you begin your next chapter,

Tamara and Ann
